Hip & Groin Pain in Sport:
Hip & Groin Pain in Sport: What You Need to Know (and What to Do Next)
Hip and groin pain is common in runners and field-sport athletes—and it’s frustrating when it keeps coming back. The fix isn’t one-size-fits-all. The right approach depends on what’s actually driving your symptoms and how you move.
Where you might feel it
People describe pain in the inner thigh, front of the hip, or pubic/low tummy area. It might start with a sharp “tweak” when sprinting or changing direction, or it can build gradually as training loads rise.
When to get it checked
Pain that stops you training or keeps returning
Discomfort with sprinting, cutting, or kicking
Night pain, catching/clicking, or a feeling of weakness
A recent spike in mileage or intensity that set things off
If any of the above sounds familiar, an assessment can save you weeks of guesswork.
How I help
As a chartered physiotherapist, my role is to:
Identify the driver of your pain (not just the label)
Explain what it means in plain English
Map a clear, individualised pathway back to your sport
Your plan focuses on calming symptoms, restoring what’s limited, and then building the right kind of strength and control for the way you run, cut, and accelerate—followed by a graded return to training that makes sense for your schedule.
What to expect in your first session
A detailed chat about your symptoms, sport, and goals
Movement and strength checks relevant to your sport
A clear explanation of what’s going on
Simple, targeted starting steps and a roadmap for the weeks ahead
No generic printouts—just what you need to move forward with confidence.
Do I need a scan?
Often, no. Most cases can be managed without imaging. If I suspect something that needs further investigation, I’ll explain why and coordinate the next step.
How long will it take?
Timeframes vary, but most athletes notice meaningful progress once the right plan is in place and training loads are structured properly. We’ll discuss realistic milestones at your assessment.
Ready to get on top of it?
Book an assessment and let’s build a plan to get you back doing what you love—without the setbacks.
